Here on A Girl’s Gotta Spa! we’re going to be featuring more and more men’s grooming reviews and tips because we all know that guy’s often go to their wives and girlfriends for skin care advice (whether they admit it or not!) Since I am a big fan of manscaping, yeah TMI but whatev (!), let’s start off with some grooming tips from Jay Anthony Valadez, barber and stylist for Remington.
When shaving either your arms, legs, chest or, um, groin, it’s often better to just shave where hair shouldn’t be growing or trim overgrown areas rather than go for total hair removal. It’s ridiculous if you look like a gorilla, but if you take it down to nothing, you get itchy stubble, it gets irritated. Just clean it up for a nice, clean, fresh look. That’s why they call it manscaping.Â
· The above rule does not apply to back hair. In that case, total removal is the way to go.
· Don’t worry about the myth that hair grows back thicker after shaving. If that were true, every bald guy would be shaving his scalp.
· People notice when you’re well-groomed, head-to-toe, but once you start grooming, you have to commit to maintaining the look. A smart strategy: neaten things up in the shower every 10-14 days to avoid getting too grizzly, while also reducing the amount of clean up.
· After shaving body parts not used to seeing a razor, shower and use a lotion that’s oil-free and alcohol-free.
· Waxes work well, but they can be painful and cost $50 or more just for your back. Products such as Remington’s new BHT-600, a body + back groomer, won’t leave you screaming in pain, can be used in the shower for easy cleanup and cost just $39.99.
· Clean your shaving equipment after each use to prevent bacteria from building up.
· Yes, some people might snicker, but consider this: bodybuilders and swimmers have done this for years, and your grooming will help you get a better tan while also keeping you from getting quite so stinky during workouts. It has to be a personal choice, you have to be self-confident. The first time is always the hardest. When people see how good you look, they’ll start doing it, too.
