While manicures started off as a way for Ellie Hock to bond during her mother’s brain cancer treatments, little did she realize these pampering moments would lead to creating her own nail polish line.

Dubbed Urban Nectar, the line consists of nail polishes focusing around honeybee type collections: Worker Bee, Forager Bee, Country Bee, City Bee and Bee Hopeful, and all the colors that surround. What do bees have to do with polish, you ask? Ellie was moved by her family crest that features a honeybee with the meaning “Sweeter after difficulties.” After her mother’s death, she was moved to try her hand at beekeeping and experienced success. The nail polishes, symbols of the time they spent at the salons together, were the final bridge to honoring her mother’s memory.
Urban Nectar polish bottles are adorned with adorable bee symbols and a long handle brush. It is very easy to apply, with a lovely finish, even among the creams. Catmint Shadow, a grey violet, is among my favorite. Propolis, a rich burgundy red, is fine even with one coat coverage. And this fall, expect to wear the vibrant Purple Hydrangea or electric Waggle while blues remain at the forefront for fingertips.
It’s no small feat launching a line, and it’s exciting to see Ellie has future colors lined up such as Pollen (bright yellow) and Clover (gorgeous Kelly green).
Urban Nectar can be found in locations around the St. Louis, Missouri area or online at http://stlurbannectar.org/contact.html. A portion of all sales from the polish line and the honey line go to Cancer Support Community Center of Greater St. Louis.
