Top 10 Radiant Orchid Products for Spring 2014

Top Ten Radiant Orchid #Spring2014 #RadiantOrchid

Spring’s hottest color in beauty, Radiant Orchid, is hands down one of my favorite beauty trends in YEARS. I’ve been wearing purple hues since I was first allowed to wear makeup (of course it wasn’t as chic back then and very 80’s.)

Below are my top ten for this season and I’d love to know if they are yours too! Read more

Mischo Beauty 5 Free Nail Lacquer

Mischo Beauty 5-free Nail Lacquer

There’s another great brand launching…this time by beauty blogger and chemist-cosmetologist, Kitiya King!

Mischo Beauty is a nail lacquer line that has gorgeous colors, it’s long-lasting and it’s 5-FREE (no Formaldehyde, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Toluene, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor.) The 5-free formula excludes toxins that have been known to contribute to cancer, birth defects and reproductive issues. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but also cruelty free.

Kitiya conceptualized the Mischo Beauty nail lacquer line in the midst of a fruitless, frustrating search for stunning, cruelty free, non-toxic polishes safe for pregnant women. As a mom of 4 boys, I know all too well how careful I was about not only what I ate, but the beauty products I was using as well. Read more

Fall Beauty Burgundy Obsession

It’s not often that I become completely obsessed with a beauty trend, but after browsing the fall issues of a few magazines I could not stop staring and lusting after the bold burgundy lips I noticed in just about every single magazine I thumbed through.  After doing pinks and corals pretty much all summer I am definitely looking forward to  a stronger, much more grown up berry lip.  It just looks so glamorous and polished…not to mention confident.  I absolutely cannot wait to visit different makeup counters in search of my perfect shade of burgundy…Sephora here I come!

Will you be ditching the corals for burgundy this Fall?

No-Crease Bow Clip from Ricky’s NYC

One of the many disadvantages of dating a hairstylist is that you tend to become a lab rat for new hair products, techniques and other miscellaneous hair stuff.  Imagine the absolute horror of experiencing a cream bath for my hair (scalp, neck and shoulder massage included)…oh the torture! Or having to sit there and get a professional blow out so that said boyfriend can try out his brand spanking new blowdryer, so rough.  Okay you get the point, dating a hairstylist definitely has its perks.  One of which is learning about…and borrowing a few insider tricks and tips.  The latest tip I  borrowed was the usage of a pair of absolutely adorbale No-Crease Bow Clips from Ricky’s NYCRead more

How to Get the Marchesa Bridal Spring 2013 Makeup Look

Spring and Summer always gives that feeling of new beginnings…maybe it’s seeing the world around you come to life, maybe because it is also crazy busy bridal season. I just attended my Uncle’s wedding last weekend, next month is my cousin’s and in the fall another Uncle is getting married. Mix that in with friends also taking the big step…and you’ve got a girl who is daydreaming of the day when her boyfriend will (finally) pop the question.

At A Girl’s Gotta Spa!, we love Laura Mercier makeup and it was recently used for the Marchesa Bridal Spring 2013 runway show. From their own mouths, here’s the inspiration, the product used and how to achieve the look yourself (whether a new bride to be, already settled in your marital bliss or anxiously awaiting walking down the aisle.)   Read more

Starry Night Inspired Beauty Straight From The Rodarte Spring 2012 RTW Runway

The Mulleavy sisters, aka the masterminds behind Rodarte, don’t normally need any help conjuring up genius show-stopping ideas, but for their Spring 2012 RTW show, they called on a little classic inspiration. Van Gogh’s tell-tale swirly stars adorned the show’s impressionist-inspired spring line, and the painter’s influence didn’t end there! The show’s beauty looks also called the Starry Night treatment, with smoldering midnight smoky eyes that seemed to peer right into the audience’s soul and make us covet everything that walked the catwalk!

Get a similarly sultry look with NYX Eyeshadow in Frosted Ocean, a sparkly midnight blue, and line eyes with a navy glitter pencil like Pop Beauty Glitz Blitz Eyeliner in Blue Beam. Additionally, the models’ hair got a sexy wet textured look (you can too by styling damp hair with Oribe Creme For Style), and cheeks were given just the faintest dewy glow (don’t want to upstage the eyes!) with a mauve cream blush like Estee Lauder Signature Satin Creme Blush in Mauve Light. And don’t forget to finish the look with matching navy nails, thanks to Deborah Lippmann’s Lady Sings the Blues!

Get The Runway’s Dramatic Liner & Sunny Glow From Jonathan Saunders Spring 2012 RTW

Aside from setting the tone for the upcoming season’s hottest makeup and hair trends, runway beauty manages to be extra fascinating for helping tell the runway show’s style story. And in the case of Jonathan Saunders’ Spring 2012 runway, makeup artist Lucia Pieroni helped tell the “fabulous yet also deranged” story of a retro-chic housewife who has perhaps taken “a bit too much Valium.” As twisted as the inspiration may be, we love the results, and rounded up a few products to steal the look yourself without abusing your prescription.

Of course, the ultra-thick dramatic liner is what makes the look – dip an angled brush like Estee Lauder Eyeliner Brush 20 in a black cream liner like Stila Smudge Pot (which, despite its name, won’t budge!). Skip the frosty-finished or shimmery bronzers and go for a matte sunny glow for that ideal Miami housewife look – try Cargo Matte Medium Bronzer. And be sure to finish things off with a slicked-back yet roughed-up ponytail to complete that “done but undone” look. Frederic Fekkai Coiff Strong Hold Volume Mousse helps smooth hair out while still retaining plenty of volume!

Review: Smart & Chic Beauty Lounge

What is a model to do when the opportunity to shoot with an awesome photographer pops up last minute, but finding a great makeup artist to be on set at the last minute …on a Saturday…in the middle of Minneapolis Fashion Week…and in the beginning of wedding season, proves impossible…

Well in my case, she gets her makeup done before the photo shoot and hopes that it looks great on camera, stays put and goes with the hair and wardrobe once on set…that’s a lot of hoping!  I just could not leave that much to chance.  I needed to find a place to have my makeup done A.S.A.P and a department store makeup counter was not an option…nothing against department store makeup counters but I was already “hoping” that a lot of things would work out for the best and I did not want to “hope” that I would end up with an experienced makeup artist.  As luck would have it, during Minneapolis Fashion week I had the opportunity to be a part of a fashion show that was co-produced by  Smart & Chic Beauty Lounge and the makeup look they created for the show was absolutely amazing so I knew that’s where I needed to go to have makeup done…if they could fit me in at the last minute of course…and thanks to the founder of Smart & Chic, Julie Swenson, they did.

Smart & Chic Beauty Lounge is a Bridal Studio, Beauty Boutique and Blow Dry Bar that also carries some pretty amazing beauty brands as well as hair accessories and purses…I HAD to have the lip slip by Sara Happ and my new favorite makeup bag item; my love and toast roller perfume in candied citron…frankly I am still shocked that I only left with two items because I had my eye on a lot more.  Smart and Chics’ atmosphere is very warm, inviting, comfortable and feminine, thanks to the furniture and decor that are all either heirlooms of Julies’ grandmother or were acquired from local antique shops.  I was actually pretty bummed that it took makeup artist, Asia Schulz, less than an hour to create the look because I just did not want to leave my new happy place.

The makeup that Asia expertly applied was exactly what I had in mind for the shoot, it also lasted for the duration of the shoot and would have lasted longer had I not removed it (photo shoot makeup can be a bit much when you’re having dinner at a family restaurant). While I was getting my makeup done I also caught glimpses of hair and make up that was being created all around me and I can definitely see why it is a local favorite for bridal and special occasion hair and makeup.  I will be back in MN in July for a friends’ wedding and will definitely be making an appointment at Smart & Chic to have my makeup done…I also need to grab the rest of those fabulous  beauty products that I missed on the first round.

Pearson Knight Recaps Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Hair Trends Fall 2011

Finally back at home and working on my next fix. I was on the road for about 5 weeks. I stopped off this season in Minneapolis as I was a Guest Artist in Smart and Chic Beauty Lounge on my way to New York Fashion Week. I was back on Aveda homegrown soil and was able to see friends, the city, and attend a Reef Shoe Graffiti event. I was also impressed with the snow fall this year, WOW!

I got into New York a few days early to prepare my week and double check schedules. I began the week backstage at Christian Siriano’s show that kicked off NYFW. I was only there to style MTV’s beauty Sophia Black as she was a front row guest of Christian’s. I wasn’t working his show but I was able to say hello to some of my favorite models, Aveda stylists and watch the craziness come together. The hair was down with texture. It appeared to be blown straight then braided in 4 sections, sprayed, flat ironed, and let down leaving it with a textured kinked wave. I was invited to watch the show which was a treat being I’m usually deep in hair until it’s over. Beautiful.

Next stop was Jason Wu. He is one of my favorites every season. The hair was creatively put up. The center part pulled back hair was secured with Aveda’s Control Force spray into a low ponytail, then a twist braid with ends fanned out was looped up and pinned. The final touch was 24K gold leaf was delicately added to the ends. So sharp and elegant. I love the creativity of the hair combined with the Batman like lace mask for some of the more elegant pieces shown. As usual I had a great time at this show with some of my favorite stylist, make up artist, models, and of course Jason Wu and Aveda.

The week continued with some house calls for events, media parties, other shows and excellent dinners. I ended up at a venue that was hosting 4 shows that day. I was going to help with the 2nd and 4th show. The teams were well staffed and I had some time to hang around the neighborhood for lunch and head back to wait for the 4th show. I started to notice the designer of the 3rd show was crying and for whatever reason had no makeup team for her show. I asked if she needed makeup done, knowing time to walk would be soon. She replied “yes” graciously and told me the feel for the show was Ghost Geisha. I said “done!” I quickly grabbed 3 talented familiar faces waiting for the next show and built a mini makeup team. This was out of my normal Fashion Week bag of tricks so it was super fresh for me. I had a great time being a part of the solution and she had a great show.

My favorite show every season is Rodarte. I love the girls, the runway, makeup, clothes, hair and inspiration I get from working with them every season. The venue was in the Gagosian Gallery and was beautiful. The hair was organically down with texture. The hair was prepped with Aveda Phomollient and free hand blown out. The top front section to the right of the part was blown forward and hand styled up and back. The rest was free hand blown and given texture with Aveda’s air control. Then it was loosely brought to the right shoulder and secured with a small fishtail braid leaving the ends out. The feel and inspiration was wheat. The texture of the hair and collection went hand in hand of course. After I calmed down from the stimulating show I headed out to Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s apartment to style them up again for their after party. Unfortunately they were beat from the day and needed all their rest for the party and I wasn’t able to dial them in and shoot the breeze.

Right when I thought that was the end of my fashion week, I was invited to be a part of a collaboration with an amazing team for a photo shoot. We were locked and stocked with wardrobe, stylist, locations, makeup, models, photographer and everyone pumped full of inspiration from the week. We ended up shooting 12 hours starting at the crack of dawn. We shot 5 models with 3 wardrobe changes, 3 different hair looks, and 7 locations including a vintage tavern, NYC rooftop and Times Square. It was fresh! Amazing way to end Fashion Week. I can’t wait to see the shots.

I flew into Orlando and rested with family for a couple days when I was invited to tag team everybody’s favorite food celebrity, Giada De Laurentiis. I headed out to meet up with the very talented celebrity makeup artist, Julie Morgan. We were working off and on throughout the South Beach Wine and Food Festival as Giada was host. She had multiple events to be at with changes of clothes, hair and makeup. My favorite was making sure she was looking beautiful at the Ocean Drive Magazine rooftop party. I couldn’t be too fixated on her hair with great music, all the sushi I wanted, and an amazing view distracting me. I have worked with her and her husband before and they are amazing. In all seriousness I was honored to participate in the parties with Julie, Giada, her family and crew. If your going to do South Beach, party hopping with Giada and crew is the way to go!

Thank you all for an amazing 5 weeks! I love what I do and you make it better. You are the most beautiful version of you so keep it great! PK Hair has exciting news coming soon so keep up or follow @1Pearson1 on twitter and Facebook.com/PKHair.

Marisol Garcia’s Favorite Makeup Looks From Fashion Week AW11

Meet Marisol Garcia. Classic, contemporary and cutting edge makeup artist Marisol Garcia has been a professional makeup artist for 13 years representing major cosmetic companies, including 10 years with M.A.C. Cosmetics and 1 year with Benefit Cosmetics as a trainer.   You can usually also find her backstage during New York, Milan and Paris fashion week producing the makeup looks for some of the biggest shows.  Besides fashion week, Marisol also works on photo shoots, commercials, film, and print (she recently worked with Lady Gaga on the set of the Alejandro music video!)

Marisol works along side many of the fashion worlds most sought after makeup artists, such as  Pat McGrath, Charlotte Tilbury, Val Garland, Kabuki, and Diane Kendall to name a few.  From how to create the perfect wedding look for each client to advanced makeup techniques, application for photos, print and HDTV and of course the wide array of looks at fashion week, whatever the occasion, Marisol always  delivers amazing results…so of course we had to approach Marisol to share with you her favorite makeup looks from this past Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week:

Once arriving in NY from sunny California, I could feel the excitement in the air for another season of NYFW Fall 2011. I had the opportunity to work a great deal of shows, big and small.

My favorite designers that I was able to work with this season were Jason Wu, Gstar Raw and Tommy Hilfiger. My favorite show overall was Jason Wu. From the feeling of the collection being inspired by lace and feathers to the makeup and hair. The makeup was very detailed. We used smokey blues, greys and black colors pulled out past the end of the eye and added a pop of refined gold glitter just on the center on the eye.  We added lots of black mascara on top and bottom lashes while  leaving the skin very clean and perfected with minimal makeup. Nothing was used in the brows, keeping them groomed and natural. A very soft pink semi frost lip color was added to the lips and a few dusts of silver highlighter were added to the cheekbones and just above the brow to finish this look.

I did see a lot of strong eyes at most shows. Some very strong and smokey and lots of glitter on the eyes too. Very little on the skin using concealer only where needed. The idea was to let the skin be as natural as possible. Very sheer blush if at all and soft pale and sometimes nude lips. I believe that the smokey eye is one of the most classic and easily applied looks. If studied and using the right brushes and products many of these looks could be easily accomplished with a little time and practice. It is also important to always remember to maintain balance. When doing a very heavy eye it is better to leave everything else almost naked. Adding a bit of soft color where needed and leaving the rest to your eyes.
