The concept of A Girl’s Gotta Spa! began simple enough 9 years ago this October.
I was 31 years old at the time. I moved from the suburbs of the Philadelphia area to the rural surroundings of the Pocono mountains just two years prior. I had 3 boys already and soon enough would be having a 4th. The idea of taking time for myself was not a foreign concept, although one that seems to have some duplicity in the notion of it. On the one hand you have people telling you that you need some me time, “Take some time for yourself,” they’d say, “You deserve it.” Then, on the other hand, you have people tsking you and accusing you of being selfish for doing so.
I believe you deserve to be pampered. Read more
Being part Italian, olive oil was always a staple growing up in my childhood home. As a child, I never knew the health benefits my parents and grandparents were passing on to me, all I knew is that it added delicious flavor to my food. Once I began to work in beauty, I was mesmerized by all of its benefits to skin, as well.
Olive fruit oil is high in Vitamin E, which we all know is fantastic for its anti-aging properties. It’s high in oleic acid and is a good skin cell regenerator. It works to attract external moisture to the skin, while still permitting the skin to properly release sweat, shed dead skin and release sebum. Read more
I first became acquainted with hot yoga 2-3 years ago, but did not begin a regular practice until last Spring. I have been absolutely hooked ever since.
I’ve noticed that practicing hot yoga regularly has made me less stressed, increased my strength and flexibility, more toned, more energized and quite a few of my family members swear that I look taller. Did I also mention that my skin is usually supple and glowing after practicing? (Must be from sweating out those toxins!)
I know that hot yoga might not be to everyone’s liking, but I absolutely love it and am grateful for the positive impact it has had on me.
If you have been considering giving hot yoga a try this year, here are a few benefits that may propel you into your nearest hot yoga studio ASAP! Read more
If you read yesterday’s post celebrating A Girl’s Gotta Spa! 8 year blogiversary, you may have noticed that I mentioned launching a natural bath and body line. I am SO excited about this!
While we have some money saved to cover some of the costs, we still need help to get off the ground.
Yesterday afternoon we launched our Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to try to get us there and I’m hoping you’ll be part of that vision!
Let me tell you a little about this amazing (I’m biased!) line of bath and body products: Read more
I shuffled a few pieces of loose leaf papers together on my desk and stapled them. I opened to the first page, put pen to paper and began to write out my short story, along with illustrations (my “books” always had illustrations.) The first page would always say, “Written by Shannon Crino” in perfect cursive penmanship. Then, dressed in my neatly pressed green plaid St. James school uniform, I would bring it to the front of the class and place it next to the other books my fifth grade teacher had organized for our daily reading time. I’d then sit and eagerly await my classmates to take one of my books and read them. I’d patiently watch their expressions as they would finger through the pages, and when they’d look up, their eyes meeting mine, they’d smile.
That sealed the deal for me when it came to writing. I knew I wanted to be putting words on pages that meant something to someone. A way I could resonate with them. For the rest of my life. Read more
With cooler weather fast approaching, one of my beloved beauty rituals that I cannot wait to get back to is bath time. I tend to avoid taking baths in spring and summer because with the warmer weather the last thing I want to do is lay in a tub of hot water. As soon as fall begins to roll around, I start getting excited about all things bath related.
The bath product usually on the top of my list of must-have bath products is a great smelling, skin softening bath oil. That sounds easy enough to find, but I also happen to have a boyfriend who also gets excited about bath time so I like to have bath products that are not too flowery and heavily scented that we can both use…a reasonable bath oil doesn’t hurt either. Ever since an amazing makeup artist in Minneapolis used Koh Gen Do Cosmetics on me for a shoot, I have been obsessed. The Moisture Foundation and Face Powder both felt really light, gentle and incredibly luxurious on my skin and my face looked uber flawless and amazing. A few weeks ago I noticed that Koh Gen Do was on Hautelook so I figured it was the perfect time for me to try the Fresh Face cheek color.
The Fresh Face cheek color has the most perfect packaging. It is just absolutely gorgeous, yet simple and sophisticated. The Fresh Face cheek color itself is just heavenly! It just glided on my skin like a dream. It felt silky, soft, smooth and positively splendid. It left my cheeks with color that truly looked like it was radiating from within, just as if I were actually blushing or had just come back in from being out in the cold. In addition to gorgeous color, the Fresh Face cheek color also gave my skin the most lovely glow. Read more
Whenever I see the words all natural, mostly organic, and use of biodegradable and recyclable packaging applied to beauty products, it becomes pretty much impossible for me to resist trying said products. My latest beauty temptation was products from Meow Meow Tweet, a line of all natural, organic, vegan products created in Brooklyn, NY by couple Tara and Jeff. Read more
After my boyfriend somehow lost my beloved blowout lotion and I was forced to use my regular body lotion to blow dry my hair for a few days, thanks to me not being able to locate a salon, beauty store or dry bar in my area that carries the brand I normally use, he went out (all on his own) and bought me the MoroccanOil Hydrating Styling Cream. I guess he felt really bad because every time I blow dried my hair, I would rave about how much I loved the blowout lotion I was using.
To be honest I was not at all excited about trying the MoroccanOil Hydrating Styling Cream, but since it was sweet that he took the time to go out and get it, I thought I would give it a try and I’m pretty ecstatic that I decided to stop pouting and try it. Read more
Whenever I’m traveling, one thing I can count on without fail is the appearance of breakouts. My skin tends to get clogged and congested on the plane and by the time I land I can feel the bumps start to emerge. In an effort to be preventative I’ve started to use facial wipes on the plane, but a lot of times these are drying on my face and exacerbates the problem.
I finally came to the conclusion that I needed a cleanser that was both gentle and moisturizing on my skin while still being capable to remove dirt, makeup and any other skin congestant found on a plane. On my last flight I cleansed my face with WEI To Go Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser. The cleanser comes in extremely airplane friendly 10ml tubes, is super easy to use and has a very refreshing lemony scent. Read more
