KVG prive’ Salon by Kelly Van Gogh

Kelly Van Gogh is an internationally renowned celebrity hair colorist and Columbia University graduate. Kelly brings over 15 years of experience to the hair color industry- from product development for giants such as Aveda, Redken, Clairol and Logics — to running three hugely successful salons in South Beach Miami, Buckhead Atlanta and a private clientele salon in New York City.

Her Kelly prive’ salon in Atlanta is gorgeous and graciously, Kelly took the time to tell me more about it:

Shannon: Can you share with my readers more insight about your salon and the inspiration for it’s interior design?

Kelly Van Gogh: My salon, KVG prive’ by Kelly Van Gogh, is full of extraordinary talent from NYC, London, Miami and Atlanta. We specialize and are known for our sensual and intelligent hair color. We love to continue to always evolve our guests into fresh approaches to hair color and the design of the environment reflects a constant evolution and flexibility. Creativity cannot come from something that is standing still…. space must reflect movement and energy, but in a beautiful and inspiring way. The design elements are reflective of the energy of South Beach and LA and the bigger than life personalities that frequent both destinations and also the European sensuality of St. Barths. Our clientele, along with our team, are well traveled and we bring back the world in which to work and create.

Our hair color is driven by sensual mixtures of tones that creates our signature look, “Chic Glamour.” We have a VVIP clientele and are word of mouth and editorially promoted. Each guest is catered to by three team members, each with a specific area of expertise. Everyone is a celebrity, even if some do not appear on film. We love what we do and look forward to servicing each client. We have a traveling team of Kelly Van Gogh Creatives that frequent NYC, Miami and yearly London and Dubai.

Shannon: What makes your salon unique?

Kelly Van Gogh: We have no ego. We have fun and love what we do. We (ourselves) are our biggest competition.

You can learn more about KVG prive’ via their website. Come Spring 2009 Kelly is also unleashing the next generation of hair coloring products that will change the nature of the way the world currently looks at hair color. Be sure to stay tuned here and I’ll keep you in the loop when more information becomes available.

Have you been to KVG prive’? Why not share your experience in the comments?

A Girl’s Gotta Spa! Beauty Blog Featured in Trendi Magazine

In June I was interviewed by Trendi Magazine regarding my blog and being a beauty blogger. Trendi Magazine is one of Finland’s hottest beauty and fashion magazines. I have the hard copy here and I have to say that I absolutely love it–the images though because I can’t read a lick of the editorial!

If you click on the image, you should be able to click again and zoom in on the text so that it’s not blurry. This interview is really edited, so once my friend Katja at Skimbaco gets her hands on a copy, she is going to translate for me what it actually says so I can tell all of you.

I can tell you they asked me which 3 beauty blogs are recommended reading. I said: Lipstick Powder n’ Paint, The Girls in the Beauty Department (Glamour mag’s blog) and The Beauty Brains.

Thanks so much to Trendi for featuring me!

Review: The Body Deli’s Glacial Mineral Mud Masque

My skin tends to be combination and a bit blemish prone. Throw in summer heat and humidity and you have one unhappy girl. I love facial masques for this very reason and mud masques tend to be my favorite. My skin has happily indulged in The Body Deli’s Glacial Mineral Mud Masque and has loved the results for my woes of summertime skin.

The Glacial Mineral Mud Masque is a delectable treat for your skin that needs to be refrigerated. Applying cold, thick mud across your face will make you a bit nostalgic of younger days and reminded me of a time when my brother, sister and I would make mud pies in the backyard and I’d somehow convince my sister to eat them (and she did!) The other good thing about applying a mud masque cold is how refreshing it feels when it is really hot out or better yet, after you just finished an intense workout with Turbo Jam.

The mud masque actually has some fragrance to it–slightly perfume-ish in a dirty, gritty way. And this masque does has a slight bit of grit to it, similar to if you scooped up some mineral-rich mud in your backyard. As the minutes pass with the masque on your face, you can feel your skin tighten. Once you rinse it away, you’ll notice that has absorbed the oil from your face.

My skin had been breaking out at the time I started using it and after using it twice in one week, my blemishes have disappeared. If you have dry skin, then you should only use it once a week. It is a pretty small jar for the money (2oz for $24) but well worth it. www.thebodydeli.com

LAB Series Skin Care For Men Helps Writer-Journalist Feel Hydrated Again

Guest post today from my friend N.L. Belardes, someone who inspires me with all of the writing he has done. He had asked me for advice on a good moisturizer for men and LAB Series Skin Care came his way…

I’m an obsessed face washer with greasy skin. Poor diet probably. Though I don’t think I eat as poorly as my parents did. At least I eat veggies. Either way, I’m sure my oily facial skin is a byproduct of what I eat.

As a guy I still always feel the need to put lotion on my face after I shower. A friend of mine recently told me that a European man she was hosting hadn’t taken a bath in days. She told him it was culturally the norm to bathe everyday. He said it was bad for the skin and her response? “That’s why we use lotion.”

My post-shower face lotion routine ended months ago, but started up again recently. Being on TV for an ABC affiliate, I refused to wear makeup, so I got into the routine of washing my face 4-5 times a day so it wouldn’t look greasy and shiny on camera. In retrospect, sure, I shouldn’t have been so stubborn, but that’s just me. A good lotion for my face would have made me feel better though. I needed a lotion that would balance my combination skin effectively.

I didn’t have the right product at home. I wanted something not so cologne smelling or perfume-like; those just make me sneeze during the day. LAB Series Skin Care for Men’s Daily Moisture Defense Lotion soon arrived at my door and I’ve been happy with it for weeks. It caters to my oily skin, its need for hydration after a shower and doesn’t leave me smelling like some yachtster’s grandpa at the country club. Check it out at www.labseries.com.

Many thanks to N.L. for contributing his review to A Girl’s Gotta Spa. You can find him around the blogosphere at:

A Girl’s Gotta Spa! Named a Favorite Beauty Blog in Nailpro Magazine

I am beyond thrilled to tell you that after 3 years of blogging my love for beauty products, tonight I found out that Nailpro Magazine named my beauty blog one of their favorites! This is the very first time any magazine has written about me and I am about to fall over from complete and utter excitement! (and now I have a press section!)

Magazines write their editorial months in advance (and yet they never spilled the beans to me!) so they have an image of my previous layout and old domain. No worries though, you all know where to find me!

Review: butter LONDON Holiday Lacquer Duo, Christmas Cuticle Miracle

July would not be July if I didn’t post something about Christmas…or a product that will be launching just in time for that wonderful time of year. As we speak…or rather, as I write this to you, I’m wearing butter LONDON’sChancer” and had the opportunity to try out their Melt Away and Handbag Holiday Cuticle Oil.

Chancer is part of the Holiday Lacquer Duo whose partner is The Full Monty. Upon applying the second coat of Chancer, The Wizard of Oz immediately came to mind as it completely replicates the color and sparkle of Dorothy’s Red Ruby Slippers. It’s beautiful and looks just as great on your toes as it does on your fingers. The ruby color itself is a flat color allowing for the sparkle to be the main attraction. The Full Monty is a glorious gold that appears to have silver mica in it. Obviously silver and gold fit very well into the holiday season.

Review: Aussie Opposites Attract Hair Care

Aussie has a new product line called Opposites Attract, it’s so new in fact, that I had a hard time finding it online other than their own website. But just take a trip to your local drugstore and you’ll be able to find it in the hair care aisle. Opposites Attract is purposed to be a line to give your hair the strength it needs with the soft touchable feeling that we all love.

My Aussie hair, Brody and Duncan semi in the picture

I love the fruity scent of Aussie and with Wild Cherry and Mango fruit extract among the ingredients the delicious fragrance will wake up your senses. Your hair is going to be amazingly soft and you feel it upon rinsing the conditioner from your hair. Work the Styling Mousse through my hair, blow dry with my Conair Infiniti Nano and then run my flat iron through my hair and voila! Gorgeous hair for less than a Starbucks coffee! (Ok maybe a coffee and a half.)

You can find the Opposites Attract Shampoo, Conditioner, Styling Mousse and Hair Spray for $2.99 each. Now my hair is not currently colored, so I don’t know if it is color-treatment safe, so for those of you with your natural color, pop over to your local drugstore and pick some up!

Review: MAC Future Earth Volcanic Ash Exfoliator and Prep & Prime Microfine Lip Refinisher

Volcanoes really only came into my vocabulary when my father moved to Hawaii several years ago. Mainly to calm my 6 year old’s fear that hot lava will not swallow his grandfather up. It was to my delight that I showed Connor MAC’s newest collection Future Earth and explained to him how volcanic ash were what made these products special. With wide eyes he watched as I opened the Volcanic Ash Exfoliator and allowed him to use a small dollop on his arm.

The Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is an amazing product that foams when it comes into contact with water and gently exfoliates with the ash and fine sugar crystals. It will be a little awkward as you feel like you are covering your skin in watery black ink…like your Bic exploded and you feel a little experimental. This exfoliator is very messy as it splashes onto your shower walls as you massage it over your skin. Yet, when you rinse it down the drain, your skin seems to come to life and is amazingly polished.

The Prep+Prime Microfine Lip Refinisher is very similar to tarte cosmetics FRXtion in its duality of a lip exfoliator on one side and a lip conditioner on the other. The difference is obviously that MAC’s exfoliator has microfine bits of volcanic ash. You can simply swipe the exfoliating portion across your lips and then use your finger tip to massage the pieces over your skin. Wipe off with a cotton pad and apply the vanilla-flavored lip conditioner. Your lips will feel amazing (and even look amazing when you apply MAC’s Dazzle Glass in Comet Blue.)

Are you loving these products too? If you haven’t had the chance to try them out yet, swing by your local MAC store and grab them before they’re gone!

5 Tips for Whiter Teeth Instantly!

From sexy summer dresses to the hottest gladiator sandals, nothing is more important to achieving an effortlessly chic summer look than a bright white smile. Celebrity Aesthetic Dentist Dr. Jonathan B. Levine whose A-list clients include Sarah Jessica Parker, Christy Brinkley and Victoria’s Secret Model Allesandra D’Ambrosio offers these tips that will brighten your smile INSTANTLY, without expensive procedures, whitening strips or even toothpaste! (Although he created my favorite teeth whitening product–GoSmile!)

1. Whiten While you Chew

Everyone knows that red wine and coffee stain your teeth, but some foods can actually work to whiten your teeth while you eat! The following foods remove stains by exfoliating teeth before the stain molecules have the time to attach deeply to the surface. It is like a skin scrub for your smile. Foods that whiten teeth include:

  • Apples
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • Lettuce

2. Kiss the Stain Away

Some lip colors can actually make your teeth look significantly whiter (and darker!).

If you have grayish teeth:

*Avoid: Red Lipsticks with blue tones

* Try: Cool tone with a brown base. Nude pinks with an almost brownish hue are best.

If you have yellowish teeth:

* Avoid: Deep, dark shades. Bright Shades. Super shiny glosses

* Try: Pink shades that have blue undertones. Nudes

3. Go Bronze

Golden and tan skin tones (from a bottle not from harmful UVA/UVB rays of course) not only give you a more toned, healthy appearance but also make your eyes pop and your teeth look brighter! Some of the most natural looking new tanners include:

SkinCeuticals Sans Soleil – a unique self-tanning lotion that delivers an even, natural looking tan without exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Price: $32.00 at SkinCeuticals.com

DuWop Revolotion Body – Unlike traditional bronzers, Revolotion is actually a moisturizer that contains SPF 15 sun protection along with a kiss of bronzing pigment and subtle shimmer. The streak free, easy to apply formula is meant for legs, arms, back and decollate. Anywhere you want to show off perfect, glowing skin. Price: $28, available at Sephora and www.beauty.com

(I personally love Aqua Tan!)

4. Accessorize

Try wearing shimmering white rhinestone jewelry or gleaming silver to make your teeth appear whiter. Stay away from gold, which exaggerates any yellowish tones in teeth.

5. Clothing

A bright white shirt will only accentuate less-than-white teeth. Choose an off-white or cream-colored shade instead. Reducing the contrast will result in the appearance of a brighter, whiter smile.

Have any easy teeth whitening tips? I’d love to hear them!
