Probiotic Skin Care: Miracle Ingredient or Marketing Hype?

As a consumer, my hope is that when a product comes to market, it delivers information that is true. I mean, we're all so busy, who has the time to fact check everything? For a while, we all believed the mascara commercials and ads where the spokesperson/model had the most Read more

Tips for Gray Hair #GrayAway

Charcoal Skin Care Products for Acne Prone Skin

Do you have oily or combination skin? You may want to consider incorporating charcoal into your skin care regimen. Sure, charcoal is totally on trend right now and may seem like a fad, but it's for good reason. Charcoal absorbs oil and draws out toxins and bacteria from the skin. Those Read more

Voluminous Beach Wave Hair

Little did I know when growing up on the beaches of Rhode Island, that the wavy hair that came naturally among the sand and surf, would be a hairstyle I would try so hard to achieve as an adult. While my hair does have a slight natural wave to it, Read more

Purple Lab Lashionista Modelista

Karen Robinovitz Shannon Nelson Andrea LustigBack in October when A Girl’s Gotta Spa! had its 4 year blogiversary party in New York City, Andrea Pomerantz Lustig from Glamour and I had lunch with Purple Lab’s Creatrix, Karen Robinovitz. (Of course in full disclosure, if you know me and have read this blog long enough, you know that Karen is a friend and someone I work with.) While sitting across from her, we both couldn’t help but remark on her eyelashes. Andrea and I agreed that we thought she was wearing false lashes. And with a big grin Karen explained to us that it was her new eyelash product that would be debuting on HSN in February and she kept hush hush on the details. So I waited with baited breath for the launch.

The night Purple Lab took to HSN, I immediately placed my order online.  Read more

Which Nail Polish is Good for Vacation?

Robyn_ZoyaThe warmer weather is here, which means no more hiding our hands in gloves and instead finding some great nail polishes to show off our jazz hands. And just in case you haven’t noticed, nail polish has now trumped lipstick as the recession staple. So when I received a question about nail polish recently, I thought it was a good break from some of the hair care questions the blog has been receiving lately.

“What are your suggestions for a good vacation nail polish? (My swimsuits are aqua and navy.) Kathryn, Rhode Island”

This is a great question because honestly how many of you have applied your most favorite polish only to have it chip a few days into your time away? I guess if you are going for the Chris Isaac/Helena Christensen “Wicked Game” video look then you are all good, otherwise it is very frustrating.

First, before recommending a color, I strongly suggest Zoya Nail Polish’s Color Lock system. I cannot sing the praises of it enough and I use it with other brands because it is THAT good. Do I dare say I could potentially guarantee that your nail polish will last longer if you use it? I think I just did.  Read more

Happy Birthday Karen Robinovitz!

karen_robinovitz_birthday

You may know Karen Robinovitz as the Creatrix of the uber hot cosmetics brand, Purple Lab. However, to many people, myself included, we know Karen as that eternal ray of sunshine you always seek out to put a little bounce back in your step. Today is Karen’s birthday and rather than do the typical birthday gift, I decided that a blog post letting her know, and the world, how much people love her, would be the best gift ever.  So I rounded up some of our friends who wanted to share some birthday wishes… Read more

It’s Time to Exfoliate and Get Polished for Spring

Yes, the days are longer and I am hoping that the sun is shining in your part of the country. It’s time to pack away heavy winter pants and tights and bare legs with swingy skirts for spring! I don’t know about you, but my legs are in need of some tender loving care. Now is the time to get in the habit (if you aren’t already) for a weekly exfoliation on your arms and legs. Wash away dead dry skin and reveal a smoother softer texture. I’ve already started wearing skirts here in California, and am sooo excited. With all of the pretty spring floral dresses and strappy sandals I’ll definitely need my legs to look their best. I’ve already unpacked and can’t wait to wear my new Christian Louboutin esapdrilles I bought on sale last fall.  Read more

Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Effet Extension in Purple Impression

In my quest for the ultimate mascara, I’ve had my eye on Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes Effet Extension. It has a unique brush that differentiates it from many of the other department store brands. Hair Care Question: My Hair is Frizzy, What Can I Do?

frizzy_hair

I recently received a hair care question from A Girl’s Gotta Spa! reader, Jessica. For this particular question I decided to reach out to my friend, hair care expert and celebrity hairstylist, Jon Reyman (yes, that Jon Reyman pictured with me and Pearson Knight from my makeover challenge). Jon is also President and one of the pros behind Beautyvt.com.

“Hi, I have a question. I have straight, long hair and it’s kinda frizzy, its not extremely frizzy, but enough where it gets on your nerves. I was wondering if you can give me a great shampoo and conditioner brand that will give my hair shine, no frizz, and be healthy. I also don’t want to use any hairspray or gels, I just want to use shampoo and conditioner to keep it simple. I would really appreciate your help. –Jessica”

Boots Botantics Luxurious Bath Elixir

This has been a particularly grey and rainy winter in San Francisco, so I’ve been enjoying more than average soaks in the tub. One of the most luxurious features of our cozy Victorian home is the pedestal soaking tub. It is the perfect length and depth for renewing, relaxing and melting the chills of winter away. To supplement these bath soaks I am always on the look out for a lovely smelling ultra bubbly bath foam. I recently picked up a bottle of Boots Botantics Luxurious Bath Elixir ($9.99 at Drugstore.com). I am a fan of Boots Chemist from my days in London, and was thrilled to find their products stateside as well at Target and Drugstore.com. Boots is known for their reasonably priced beauty and grooming products and is the #1 beauty and skincare brand in the UK.  Read more
