Cleansers for Natural, Textured, Curly Hair

Right now my hair looks and feels dry, lackluster and just downright sad. I know that I could've taken better care of my hair, but sometimes it's much too easy to neglect my hair care routine and just disguise less than stellar hair with a cute braid or bun. Agreed? I Read more

It’s Time to Exfoliate and Get Polished for Spring

Yes, the days are longer and I am hoping that the sun is shining in your part of the country. It’s time to pack away heavy winter pants and tights and bare legs with swingy skirts for spring! I don’t know about you, but my legs are in need of some tender loving care. Now is the time to get in the habit (if you aren’t already) for a weekly exfoliation on your arms and legs. Wash away dead dry skin and reveal a smoother softer texture. I’ve already started wearing skirts here in California, and am sooo excited. With all of the pretty spring floral dresses and strappy sandals I’ll definitely need my legs to look their best. I’ve already unpacked and can’t wait to wear my new Christian Louboutin esapdrilles I bought on sale last fall.  Read more

Hair Care Question: My Hair is Frizzy, What Can I Do?

frizzy_hair

I recently received a hair care question from A Girl’s Gotta Spa! reader, Jessica. For this particular question I decided to reach out to my friend, hair care expert and celebrity hairstylist, Jon Reyman (yes, that Jon Reyman pictured with me and Pearson Knight from my makeover challenge). Jon is also President and one of the pros behind Beautyvt.com.

“Hi, I have a question. I have straight, long hair and it’s kinda frizzy, its not extremely frizzy, but enough where it gets on your nerves. I was wondering if you can give me a great shampoo and conditioner brand that will give my hair shine, no frizz, and be healthy. I also don’t want to use any hairspray or gels, I just want to use shampoo and conditioner to keep it simple. I would really appreciate your help. –Jessica”

Boots Botantics Luxurious Bath Elixir

This has been a particularly grey and rainy winter in San Francisco, so I’ve been enjoying more than average soaks in the tub. One of the most luxurious features of our cozy Victorian home is the pedestal soaking tub. It is the perfect length and depth for renewing, relaxing and melting the chills of winter away. To supplement these bath soaks I am always on the look out for a lovely smelling ultra bubbly bath foam. I recently picked up a bottle of Boots Botantics Luxurious Bath Elixir ($9.99 at Drugstore.com). I am a fan of Boots Chemist from my days in London, and was thrilled to find their products stateside as well at Target and Drugstore.com. Boots is known for their reasonably priced beauty and grooming products and is the #1 beauty and skincare brand in the UK.  Read more

Purple Lab Challenge: Operation Chic & Sexy

karen_robinovitzToday Karen Robinovitz, Creatrix of Purple Lab, is launching on HSN at 9am EST (and again at night 8pm EST.) Purple Lab epitomizes all things sexy and chic. My favorite being Huge Lips Skinny Hips, but I’m pretty sure Lashionista Modelista will quickly become my second favorite (I saw what amazing feats this lash growth-enhancing liquid liner/tubing mascara can do back in October when it was still all hush hush!)

Karen and I are in contact on a daily basis and about 2 weeks ago she issued me a challenge that I like to call: Operation Chic & Sexy (or she might call it Dramatic Makeup – Purple Lab NYC.) Regardless, she was sending along her only lab sample of Cheek Implants in 6 Inch Heels and I was already armed with my Huge Lips Skinny Hips in Worship Kate to help aid in this challenge. Now I just needed to find someone to do my hair, someone to do my makeup, find an event to go to and find an amazing date to show up with. I had my work cut out for me.Davide_Torchi-ShannonNelson-1

I tackled hair first. Davide Torchio has invited me into his salon many times, but the timing had never been right. In fact, I had sent Nando in my place once when he had his hair emergency. Without hesitation, Davide gave me an appointment time and I was excited to see what he had in store for me. After seeing what he and Roberto Morelli did for the Lance Bass photo shoot, I took a chance to see if Roberto would be willing to do makeup for a non-celebrity like myself. When Davide tweeted that Roberto agreed, I was over the moon.  Read more

Makeover with Davide Torchio and Roberto Morelli

This is me before. Karen Robinovitz of Purple Lab had issued me a challenge: make yourself over into the sexy woman that you are. The full details of that challenge will be in my next post, but since my 5 hours spent with hair stylist Davide Torchio and makeup artist Roberto Morelli were so awe inspiring, I felt it deserved a post of its own.

So you remember my post about the transformation of Lance Bass, right? Well that is what I wanted for myself. I told Davide and Roberto that I grew up on makeover shows and hoping that one day someone could transform me into the swan I knew I was inside (which, sidebar: do you remember that reality TV show, The Swan? That show was crazy.) Read more

Extra Kissing Power for Valentine’s Day – Smashbox Lip Treatment

During the coldest winter months I am in a constant battle with dry flaking lips. I’ve tried several lip balms and lip treatments and many of them only protect the surface and don’t get to the heart of the problem, which is dry peeling skin.

Smashbox’s Lip Treatment SPF 15 ($16 at Sephora) is one lip treatment that has been effective in my battle against dry chapped lips. This lip therapy has a subtle sweet honey flavor. It is colorless, but does add a pretty transparent sheen. The honey helps to soften and moisturize while the Vitamin E and shea butter help to nourish the skin. It is also packed full of antioxidants, vitamins A, C & E as well as shea butter, jojoba and avocado oils. Chamomile and aloe aid in soothing.  Read more
