This is my first ever Youngblood purchase and I went with the Youngblood Pressed Mineral Eyeshadow Quad in Purple Majesty. This quad contains the shades Moonstone ( a sheer satin white), Lilac Bouquet (a light warm satin lavender), Wild Orchid (a warm orchid mixed with bronze satin with a bit of metallic sheen, and Heather Smoke ( a deeper purple shade). BareMinerals launches the new Remix Collection this month and to me it has a very 80′s vibe. That could be due to the blues in The Wild Thing eye shadow quad or the new Aqua Blast mascara! Oh goodness I remember blue mascara but not in a good way so I was quite skeptical at this turquoise looking tube. The entire collection 11-pc. collection is presented in limited edition aqua metallic packaging. Read more
Pressed for time? Always in a hurry? We modern women play so many different roles, it’s a wonder we have time to sleep! That’s why I’m so thrilled when I find a makeup product that gives me a pretty, polished look in no time flat. Mally Beauty’s Evercolor Eye Shadow Sticks are just that product! These multi-tasking eye shadows are like having an eye primer, eye base and eye shadow all in one. There are 22 amazing shades to choose from!
I originally fell for Mally’s Evercolor Eye Shadow when I purchased the Mally Tips and Tricks Kit earlier this year. That kit had an Evercolor Eye Shadow Stick in Twilight, a pretty everyday taupe that I finished up quite quickly. That only fed my hunger for more so when this 5-pc. set was offered at QVC, I snatched it up!
This set includes: Read more
When the seasons start to change, I always find myself in a bit of a makeup rut – specifically when it comes to lip color. While it’s no secret that I’m a die-hard red lipstick fanatic, I like to go with something a bit lighter for early fall.
I’m not usually one for shimmery lipsticks, but Tigi’s Decadent Lipstick in Splendor totally threw me for a loop. An earthy, reddish-gold hue, it’s slightly darker than my normal color choice… but I am totally loving it. Decadent, indeed!
For a shade with significant shimmer, the color applied smoothly and lasted through a grande cup of coffee. As always, I still recommend a thorough lip exfoliation prior to application – all shimmery shades tend to get a bit clumpy towards the end of the day, and this one is no exception. Read more
Every time I venture into a Sephora, I always stop to look at the Charlotte Ronson display. I always find it interesting when a fashion designer branches out into cosmetics. Her packaging and colors give off a fun whimsical vibe that appeals to me.
Inspired by her friends and family, the line takes direction from the different looks and lifestyles of her inner circle: there’s multi-tonal eye shadow palette for Nicole Richie; a weightless nonstick gloss for her DJ sister Samantha; a luminous light filtering powder for Rashida Jones. The entire collection is designed around her muses—their different routines and diverse beauty—appealing to a wide range of women who want to look pretty on-the-go, without trying too hard. Every product seamlessly transitions from day to night, and is especially portable and easy to use. Plus, the formulas are infused with light-adjusting technology so you look flawlessly radiant in every cast of light—no matter what spotlight you find yourself under.
What caught my attention this time was the All You Need Eye Shadow palette in Lake. I wonder who this is named after? Lake Bell? Ricki Lake? Anywho, I found the color combination and mix of matte and shimmer shades in this palette quite unique. The shades are: Read more
I am a lipgloss fanatic. I prefer it over lipstick any day. But the trouble with lipgloss is how quickly it comes off. When taping my PA Live segments I always apply gloss on my way into the building…but by the time we start filming, it is usually gone. So while at CVS 2 weeks ago, I saw L’Oreal’s Infallible Never Fail Lipgloss and decided I’d give it a go. I picked up their new 8 Hour lipgloss (Red Fatale, 320), as well as the 6 Hour Lipgloss (Undeniable Mauve, 515) not realizing that besides the difference in color, there would be a difference in performance. Typically, we don’t really talk about direct sales companies on A Girl’s Gotta Spa! However, I couldn’t help but be proud of a local Northeast PA woman who was recently spotlight on TV in an Avon commercial. So I asked Jill Saylor to send along her tips for staying beautiful both inside and out.
1. Stay Clear of Negative People. Misery really loves company and there will always be people who don’t understand the choices you make. Hold strong to your positive nature and what you really want. When I first started selling Avon, I wasn’t making a lot of money and I had friends who would discourage me, but in the end I kept pushing myself and now I’m extremely happy with how I’ve grown my Avon business. I have been able to financially support my children on my own doing everything from moving them to a bigger home to helping them buy their first cars. It just goes to show that if you keep going with your gut feeling and stay true to how you feel, things will work out.
2. Push through your fears. I used to be afraid of everything. I wasn’t able to get over my own fears until I made a choice to start with the small ones and take them on one at a time. Most importantly, I watched myself as I overcame them thinking how easy it was! Think about the worst case scenario. If you can push past that, you can start to question why you were afraid in the first place. As time goes on you continue to get stronger and before you know it, you are conquering your bigger fears. Whenever I wear makeup I always tend to hide from eye shadow. Not because I don’t like eye shadow or have an allergy or anything like that, but simply because I am terrible at applying it. I would love to wear any sort of an eye; matte, smoky, gold…anything. But whenever I make an attempt at eye shadow application, I fail miserably and always end up just wiping it off and going with a naked eye. I decided to give Too Faced Eye Shadow Collection a try because it comes with three how-to lesson cards that give you step by step application instructions for creating the looks on the cards which include a Fashion Eye, a Classic Eye and a Day Eye and also combines both warm and cool tones.
I decided I would first try the classic eye. The instructions were absolutely very easy to follow and took me about five minutes…maybe even less than that.  The colors were really silky and easy to blend so I did not end up with three different lines of color on my eyes. I have to admit I was a bit leery about applying matte navy and matte stone grey shadow to my lids and imagined I may look like a caricature of myself, but the look I ended up being a mixture of soft, pretty and a little saucy. I have not tried the other two eye looks as yet, but I am definitely planning on trying out the fashion eye on Valentine’s night.
From the time I was allowed to wear makeup…actually even before then, I have always longed to wear red lipstick. I have always associated red lipstick with being a  grown up as well as as being sophisticated. I have been experimenting with red lipsticks since I was sixteen years old and have never found a shade of red that I truly, madly, deeply loved and could not live without. Either they were too light or dark, sometimes after a while the red would start looking bright pink on my lips or worse yet, orange. Sometimes they just had too much shine and I am not particularly keen on shiny red lips…my lips are not Angelina Jolie’s size, but they are still pretty full. Shiny red lips have a tendency to make me look cartoonish or worse yet, like the female Gremlin in Gremlins 2 (just Google it and you’ll see what I mean!)
So for about a decade into my makeup wearing stage I have tried numerous red lipsticks without success and had given up until just recently. With red lipstick seemingly being the item du jour lately, my longing for that perfect shade of red returned, plus Valentine’s Day is right around the corner so visions of myself in a pink dress with red lips were swimming in my head. I decided to visit my happy place…also known to many as Sephora.
Before heading to Sephora I decided to do some research and Googled the best red lipsticks for my skin tone. I had already tried a lot of the red lipsticks that came up in my search results, but for some reason had never given NARS a try. I wanted a matte red lipstick that would look great on my brown skin.It actually did not take me very long to find the lipstick I craved…OK actually it ended up being a lip pencil. Once I tried NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella I knew my search was finally over. The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is a lip pencil and lipstick combined into one very easy to apply crayon. The color is absolutely beautiful and I do not need to line my lips before applying it nor does it bleed. I love that there is absolutely no shine to this lip pencil so my lips end up with a velvety look and texture…almost like a rose.
Since I bought the lip pencil I have been wearing it on a consistent basis…not just out at night, but also during the day with just jeans and a t-shirt and my red lips never manage to look out of place. I cannot wait to wear this on Valentine’s Day…with or without the pink dress I had in mind. Oh and did I mention that I have since returned to Sephora and purchased the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama and Dolce Vita…methinks I have finally been cured of my addiction to lip glosses! If you have been struggling with finding the perfect red lipstick, I highly suggest to head to your nearest Sephora and give any one of the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils in red a try.
I have mixed feelings about Bobbi Brown’s new ‘Neons & Nudes‘ collection. Mainly because I do love wearing nude makeup shades, but just about every beauty brand right now already has the same obsession (with Urban Decay knocking it out of the park with their 2-part Naked palette of course!) In other words, it’s hard for me to be impressed by yet another series of not-so-blah neutrals.
The neons, on the other hand, totally intrigue me. I’m not one to regularly incorporate many not-seen-in-nature colors into my daily beauty routine, but I’m always open to experiment, and the more “adventurous” side of Bobbi’s new collection is definitely inspiring me to dabble outside my comfort zone! Some of my favorite collection highlights include the three punched-up lip gloss additions – now in Citrus, Cosmic Pink, and Ultra Violet – which are fun and spring-festive but sheer enough to not appear costume-y or kitschy.
I also adore the new eyeshadows, in Ultra Violet Shimmer Wash and the stunning cobalt Blue Bell. Of course, I realize that these shades aren’t for everyone (and they require a very skilled hand to wear them chicly), so what do you think – gorgeous or gimmicky?
