Proper skin care is not something that you only teach your daughter or the female in your life, but is something I feel boys need to learn, as well.
Of course, I'm biased having four sons and all.
Yet, we know it's true. Where are the ads on TV or in Read more
Leave the comforting and warm scents of winter behind and trade them in for something lighter. Fruits and florals pair perfectly with strappy sandals. While I love the musky fragrances of the colder months, by March I long for scents that are fresh and uplifting.

UPDATE: It is with a heavy heart to tell you that Ava Gioe, only 5 years old, passed away on July 20, 2012. The below auction is closed. We raised $400 for her medical care at the time of this auction. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Every May, we hold our annual Mom: Get Glamorous contest in search of a deserving mother to gift a prize package of beauty products. This year, I decided to do things a little differently. There is a little girl that I know named Ava who has an inoperable brain tumor. Her parents, that I know through my church and lifegroup, are going to the ends of the earth to get whatever treatment they can for Ava to find a cure. As I type this, Ava is in Maryland getting ready to undergo an experimental brain surgery on Wednesday. Ava is only 5 years old…coincidentally, my son Brody turns 5 today. I cannot even imagine going through what Mike and Gianni have gone through with Ava since the time of her stroke at age 3.
Which is why I have decided to hold an auction to help raise money for this family. As you can imagine, all of the travel (and expenses that come with that), the time out of work, medical expenses that are not covered, all add up. I can’t imagine trying to fight for my child’s life all the while wondering how I will make the mortgage payment or how I will pay for gas to get her to her next appointment hours and hours away. Oh how I love me some sparkly lip gloss. With the UV rays not as intense in the winter as they are in the warmer months, I think it is safe to break out the shine on my lips.
Pleasure Principle, Glitter and Ice, Spanking Rich, Love Alert
MAC Cosmetics Dazzleglass, Glitter and Ice, is just what I need for some shimmer…especially since this winter has practically been snow-less and nothing else seems to be glistening around here. OK, maybe the lake in front of my house is…but I don’t want to make you jealous.
The colors in Glitter and Ice are just small pops of color with lots of dazzle and naturally, most of them are currently sold out on the website with the exception of Love Alert. Did you scoop them up before they disappeared? You can also call your local MAC store to see if they have them in stock local to you. Love the colors? Let me know in the comments!
Monday, October 24th, was a pretty busy day. Then about 9pm it hit me…something amazing happened on this date 6 years ago. I opened a Blogger account and launched A Girl’s Gotta Spa! (<–This link takes you to the old site.) I sat back in my chair and welled up with tears. Do most people cry when celebrating longevity in their career? Maybe not, but when it is one that has changed your life and the path you were on, I think it’s reasonable to say it’s OK to cry. Happy tears of course.
Six years ago (if you are mathematically disabled like me–that is back in 2005) I just wanted to connect with other like-minded women from my home in rural PA (otherwise known as the Poconos.) I was still new to the area I was living in and didn’t know many people. A Girl’s Gotta Spa! gave me the ability to talk about my passion (beauty) while doing something I always wanted to do (write) and then hear from complete strangers from all around the world. I’ll never forget the day 2 years after launching when an editor for the Finnish magazine Trendi emailed me to tell me my blog was popular in Finland and they wanted to feature me in a story. I was like: holy smokes, someone in Finland knows who I am? That was mind blowing.
This blog, and my readers, have seen me through good times and bad–babies being born (Duncan and Brody), a divorce, a new happy and healthy relationship with an awesome guy, downsizing in a job, creating my own career for myself, being on the verge of broke to recovering and being financially stable…it has been one heck of a ride.
So I thought it would be appropriate to hold a giveaway. I know that is rare for this blog, I never want to be known for just constantly giving away stuff because I want your eyes for learning and connecting, not freebies. But amongst my pile of beauty overload, I have a bunch of products from MAC Cosmetics Wonder Woman collection. Fitting, no? Many of my friends and colleagues have referred to me as Wonder Woman (and Superwoman) so I thought it would make for an exciting giveaway.
(Image is not representative of all of the products listed, just some of them.)

Other than having a day off for Labor Day, there are plenty of reasons to dread the month of September. Going back to school, chilly fall weather, the end of carefree summer beach days, etc. However, renowned photography, filmmaker, and all-around bad-ass artist Cindy Sherman, along with MAC Cosmetics, may turn your autumn blues around!
The Cindy Sherman for MAC collection hits shelves September 29th and draws inspiration from three kooky characters or “faces,” each of which has their own color story with corresponding lipsticks, shadows, and pigments to match. With such an impressive variety of colors and finishes, from pastels to neons and mattes to ultra-shimmers, this collection hopes to inspire makeup collectors to create their own larger-than-life looks while still leaving plenty of room for your own imagination as the artist! I love the sensible-yet-chic khaki green and navy pigments as well as the color-rich fuchsias and oranges, but I’ll have to see the collection in person before I decide if they’re worth the splurge! One thing’s for sure — this much-anticipated collection won’t last long!
Lead make up artist at Philosophy Di Alberta Ferretti, Lucia Pieroni for MAC went to Goldie Hawn in the 60′s for her inspiration. The look was a very fresh face. Glowing fresh skin, a soft pale pink metallic lipstick and “loads of mascara”…but not so much that it looked clumpy. It was more of a nod to the 60′s without being completely 60′s.
The make up look at Alice & Olivia was all about the punky eye. According to lead makeup artist , Polly Osmond for M.A.C, there was no specific reference for the look, it was just the “street version of the punky eye.” To achieve the look; Fluidline in Blacktrack was used on the lids to create a thicker/rounder line around the eyes, the brows were penciled in, Haute & Naughty Lash Mascara on the top lashes, a bit of highlighter on the cheeks and Runway Lipstick on the lips. A lot of edginess on the eyes and a very glamorous lip. Read more
Lead makeup artist at ADAM, Romy for MAC Cosmetics took the attention to the eyes. Black creme liner (a full, thick line) was applied to the lids in a winged shape along with two coats of Haute & Naughty Lash Mascara to the upper lashes only. Face And Body Foundation as well as concealer was applied to the face as needed, on the cheeks Posey and Laid Back Blush Cream were mixed and applied to the apples and the lips were left very subdued with just lip conditioner applied using the fingertips. Read more
Meryl Streep in Out of Africa was the inspiration referenced by lead make up artist for MAC Cosmetics Carole Colombani at Suno. The look was feminine and soft as well as graphic and modern.  The same palette was used for the lips and cheeks, Haute & Naughty Lash mascara was applied just to the upper lashes, a beige/moleskin shadow on the eyes, Teddy eyeliner (which is an eye kohl) on the lid,  a brush dipped in water first then dipped in color on the lower lash line for a softer look and the skin was kept very natural with just moisturizer and concealer where needed.
I absolutely loved this look, it was clean, fresh, feminine and seemed to be the most wearable…on an everyday “I wish I had something to dress up for at least twice a week but that lifestyle keeps alluding me” basis.
Lead makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics, Lisa Butler, went for an authentic 70s look for the Bill Blass AW11 runway show. To get the look she applied very light foundation and concealer to the skin…so the skin would look perfect, but not made up.   On the eyes she applied a thin line of black cream liner and extended it out a bit, Black Opulash Mascara was applied to the lashes and fake lashes with the length chopped off were applied to the upper lashes (all on the inner lashes, none on the outer lashes) to create a black, sharp area on the eyes. To complete the look Seaside was applied to both the lips and cheeks. Read more
