As the saying goes, hind sight is 20/20. I thought I was a beauty wiz when I was a teenager. I even thought I was super trendy…maybe even ahead of the trends. You, too?
Then I look at pictures of myself from back in the day and snicker, and often realize why it was that I couldn’t get a boy to date me until I was 17. Those brows! The see-through bangs! The super curled then teased out hair! And the worst offense? That tail! I used to keep a section of my hair longer than the rest, bleach it blonde; sometimes I would braid it, othertimes I would decorate it with beads (as seen here.) Either way, this look you see below? I thought I had a good handle on beauty (and fashion.)
This picture is from 1989. I was in 9th grade (14 years old) and asked to be in a “fashion” photo shoot for a yearbook layout. I certainly felt my role as fashion and beauty icon was confirmed by this request. See the pic below:
If you could go back in time and be your best friend, what beauty tips would you share? I would explain that good, manicured brows are golden. Those oversized monsters weren’t helping me. I’d recommend side swept bangs; mine were barely there–why have them at all? I would explain how much time I would save in the morning if I axed curling all of that hair to tease it out, not to mention the money I would save on hairspray. Highlighting my hair with Sun-In? A big no (and give myself these hair coloring tips.) I would also let myself know that tails are for animals, not humans.
What tips would you give yourself? Leave a comment and let me know. If you’re feeling brave, post a picture of your teenage self on A Girl’s Gotta Spa! fan page and give your tip there as well!
Shannon began A Girl’s Gotta Spa! beauty blog in 2005 to morph her love of beauty and in educating women on what truly works and what does not. In 2013 she launched a bath and body line as an extention of the beauty blog. One thing she always has on her at all times? Lip balm.
