L’Oreal has updated their eye shadow quads for 2013. The new Colour Riche Eye Shadow Quads ($7.95) are made up of micro-milled pigments in a crystal-clear base that creates a silk texture and rich smooth color. Sounds good!
And they give us just of ton to choose from, there are an astounding 20 color combinations ranging from nudes, the brights to smoky and everything in between. In fact it’s one of those in between I have for you today, Rose for Romance. Believe me it was hard to choose–I think I stood in front of the display for a full hour before deciding on #105 Rose Romance. I was drawn like a magnet to the neutrals of course, then the purple combinations caught my eye and then of course the smoky quads were beckoning too. Finally I settled on Rose for Romance and I’m glad I did.
Each quad has four coordinating shadows to be used to Color, Brighten, Contour and Define. Instructions on how to accomplish the look are on the back of the palette. All the color combinations are well chosen and work well together; either complimenting each other or providing a nice contrast. Rose for Romance has a pinky mauve satin shade (very pretty), a shimmery ivory, a taupe with purple undertones and a satin chocolate brown. I chose it for this slightly unusual combination. The shadows have an overly powdery texture with the exception of the ivory shade, which I found a bit chalky and stiff. The others kick up a good bit of powder and I had to pack them on to get them to show up on my eyes. They blend well, but you will need a primer or base as they do fade.
The packaging is nice for drugstore, each quad is surrounded by a gold border and the top of the compact is clear so you can see the colors before you buy. There is no mirror and the standard throw away sponge applicator is included. It’s a nice bonus, though, that an application guideline is on the back.
Bottom Line: Drugstore options are improving, but I wouldn’t rank L’Oreal Color Riche on par with her sister Infallible 24 hour eye shadows quite yet. However, with decent performance and a huge color range, L’Oreal Color Riche Eye Shadow Quads are a good budget choice.
