We all want to stay looking our best, but sometimes you have to wonder exactly what is in the products that you buy at the beauty counter. We always advise to read the label and know your ingredients. With more and more people looking towards more natural ingredients, it’s good to know which one’s work best for your skin according to the season.
One of the many winter skin ailments we all deal with is dry, cracked lips. This is because the humidity is very low in the winter and when you turn your thermostat up, you’re depleting moisture which further dries out your skin. What you really need is a good lip scrub and lip balm to nourish and protect your lips!
Here’s a DIY Lip Balm recipe:
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- Heat it very gently in a pan
- Add 1/2 a teaspoon of honey and 1/2 teaspoon of cocoa butter
- Stir in 3/4 of a teaspoon of beeswax, and continue to heat the mixture gently until this melts.
- Add a drop or two of almond extract to give the mixture a nice taste (or you could use vanilla)
- Pour the mixture into a small jar and let it cool.
Voila! You have made your very own lip balm!
Another great way to look after your skin is to apply jojoba oil to it on a regular basis – in fact, some people say that this is one of the best anti aging products. Jojoba contains substances known as wax esters, which are a type of emollient. Emollients penetrate the outer layers of your skin, and make it softer and more pliable. They also slow down the rate at which water evaporates from your skin, so that it doesn’t dry out as quickly.
Another skin issue that can be combatted naturally are blemishes. These little inflamed areas can be difficult to cover up with makeup and can, at times, be painful. Fortunately, there is a great natural solution for these as well. Just take some peppermint leaves, add a bit of lemon juice and pulverize them in your blender. Apply this to your blemish for about 15 minutes, and then rinse it off with some cool water. Do this a few times a day if necessary and your blemish will soon start to fade. The reason this works is that peppermint oil contains menthol, which is a slight astringent – it dries your skin just enough to unblock the clogged pore that is causing it. The other great thing about menthol is that it is very soothing, so if that blemish is bothering you, menthol will make the inflammation less painful.
